True leadership is not measured solely by titles held or milestones achieved, it is defined by the courage to create meaningful change, the wisdom to serve with purpose, and the determination to leave every place better than it was found. The leaders who create lasting impact are those who combine professional excellence with unwavering values, continuously using their expertise to build stronger institutions, stronger communities, and brighter futures.

Michelle Arias Tapia exemplifies this philosophy. Guided by faith, resilience, and an unwavering desire to serve, Michelle continues to inspire through both her leadership and her example.

In this exclusive conversation with The Women Stories, Michelle Arias Tapia reflects on the defining moments of her journey, the lessons learned through personal and professional challenges, her vision for the future, and the values that continue to shape her leadership. Read on to discover the inspiring story behind a woman who believes that true success is measured not only by professional achievements, but by the positive impact we leave on people, communities, and future generations.

A Journey Guided by Purpose and Service

Michelle believes that her background and professional journey have truly been experiences that God has placed in her life. She believes that, in a profound way, God has intended for her to be part of very important moments and transactions in her country and that, in one way or another, He draws her into the public arena to collaborate on meaningful projects and add value to them.

Her career began in banking with Mundial Asset Management, a brokerage firm within the BanVivienda Group. There, she completed her first internships in the legal department and the compliance department before later becoming Vice President of Risk within the same organization. While studying in Boston, she also had the opportunity to work at an institution called NOAH in Massachusetts, helping Latino families save their homes from predatory lending.

After returning to Panama, Michelle joined the Public Credit Directorate as an advisor for all state financing. From there, she advanced to become Chief of Staff at the Ministry of Economy and Finance, where she had the opportunity to lead not only financing initiatives but also the technical aspects of landmark national projects. These included Panama's first Metro system, the Metrobús transactions, the electric bus fleet in Panama, the acquisition of the toll roads known as ENA, Citibank's first custody platform, and the development of more than 26 legislative initiatives and reforms, including the creation of the sovereign wealth fund and the first amendment to the public procurement law, among others.

Following her government service, she joined Procter & Gamble, where she worked in Government Relations across Latin America. During this period, she collaborated extensively on free trade agreements, regional industrial strategies, government relations, support for strengthening the SEM Law, and various regional initiatives.

From Procter & Gamble, Michelle moved to Grupo Verde Azul, the headquarters of one of the country's most successful real estate groups. There, she contributed to projects such as the Buenaventura Beach Resort, the early development of Santa María in Panama, the monetization of assets through the stock exchange, and Panama's first diamond exchange. She also became involved in hotel contracts, hotel franchise negotiations, and several large-scale investment projects. These experiences gave her a broad understanding of what is required to successfully execute major development initiatives.

Afterward, she founded her own law firm, Arias & Jované. For the past nine years, she has dedicated herself to building the firm while working on projects that create employment, strengthen investment in Panama, and attract foreign investment into the country. Looking back, Michelle believes her career has been remarkably diverse and has allowed her to contribute to meaningful initiatives across both the public and private sectors.

Looking Beyond the Legal Perspective

Michelle believes that what has distinguished her throughout her career is that she has never viewed her work as being solely about the legal aspects. Beyond reviewing contracts, she approaches every project with a broader perspective shaped by the experiences, challenges, obstacles, and lessons she has encountered throughout her professional journey.

To provide effective legal advice, she believes it is essential to understand the technical, regulatory, and operational aspects of every project. She stays closely involved in the execution process and in identifying the critical elements that every project should consider as part of its overall strategy.

This philosophy allows her firm to provide comprehensive advice to clients. They come to the firm not only for legal services but also for meaningful guidance based on industry knowledge, market insights, lessons from projects that have succeeded or failed, and extensive experience working with government entities across the region. For Michelle, it has never been about simply billing hours for drafting contracts; it has always been about helping clients make informed decisions that contribute to the long-term success of their projects.

The Greatest Legacy Begins at Home

Michelle believes that her greatest achievement has nothing to do with her professional career. Her greatest achievement is being the mother of Samuel and Mía. They are her greatest pride, her greatest accomplishment, and the driving force behind everything she does.

They inspire her to work on projects that improve her country and contribute to the development of the region. More importantly, she wants them to see a mother who demonstrates that people are not placed in this world simply to exist, but to change realities and create meaningful impact.

Of course, Michelle has had the honor of serving on various boards of directors in both the banking and business sectors, and those appointments fill her with gratitude. However, nothing compares to the pride she feels in being a mother. She hopes that every professional achievement she accomplishes becomes a source of inspiration for her children, a path filled with hope, perseverance, integrity, and purpose.

She has always believed that no professional achievement can compare with success within one's family. If people fail in their families, they fail in everything else. To excel in their careers, they must first nurture their homes and protect the foundation of their families. By strengthening the core of society, they can make greater contributions to their workplaces, their countries, and especially their region, which so greatly needs unity, collaboration, and shared purpose.

Finding Strength Through Every Challenge

Michelle has experienced many difficult moments, both personally and professionally. Throughout her career, she has learned that there are times when a person would do anything to remain in a position and continue contributing, but wisdom lies in knowing when to step in and when to step away. That understanding has ultimately protected her from many situations that could have become far more difficult later on.

Leaving her role serving her country was deeply painful because she genuinely loved the work she was doing. However, as things became increasingly politicized, she realized that she is not a political person. There comes a point when a person no longer feels aligned with the environment, and it is important to recognize that moment. No matter how passionate someone is about their work or how much more they wish to accomplish, they must have the wisdom to know when it is time to move forward.

On a personal level, Michelle has also experienced significant loss, including the loss of loved ones and other very difficult moments in her life. Through each of these experiences, she has learned that the most important thing is to take the valuable lessons they offer, continue believing in oneself, allow oneself to make mistakes, accept failure as part of growth, and keep moving forward.

Building a Legacy for the Future

Michelle envisions a future where she can contribute to more high-impact projects that create jobs, generate hope, and open new opportunities for people in her country. She also sees herself teaching, as she is deeply passionate about sharing knowledge, especially with women and younger generations who, in her opinion, often struggle with work discipline, resilience, and understanding the value of perseverance. She believes she has both professional and personal experiences that can inspire others, and she hopes to become an educator at some stage in her career.

Ten years from now, Michelle also sees herself serving her country once again in an important leadership role. She would like to help position Panama not simply as a Latin American country but as a developed nation recognized for excellence, innovation, and opportunity. She would be honored to serve in positions such as Minister of Education or Minister of Commerce and Industries, where she could contribute new ideas and leave a meaningful legacy in areas where she has not yet had the opportunity to serve.

On a personal level, Michelle hopes her children will continue to be proud of their mother. She would also love to see them carry forward the legacy of Arias & Jované, although she will always support whatever path they choose in life.

Beyond her professional aspirations, Michelle also envisions many travels with her friends, something she truly enjoys, and she hopes to continue writing, editing, and publishing more books in the years ahead.

A Lifelong Commitment to Learning

Michelle believes that remaining relevant requires staying active and continuously learning. For her, it is important to stay inspired by listening to other people, attending conferences, and reading new books. She also believes that people should focus on the areas they are truly passionate about. While she can speak about many topics, she prefers to dedicate her time and energy to mastering the fields that genuinely inspire her.

She has a personal rule of beginning a new master's degree every two years. This year, because she is participating in the Cali Fellows Program at the Aspen Institute, she decided not to begin another master's program due to the travel commitments involved. However, once she completes the leadership program, she plans to begin her Ph.D. After earning three master's degrees, pursuing a doctorate feels like the next academic challenge.

Michelle believes people should continuously challenge themselves academically and maintain the mindset of lifelong students, always curious and always eager to learn. Equally important, in her view, is learning from the people around them. Too often, remarkable individuals are encountered without taking the time to understand what they do or how they do it. She believes an extraordinary amount can be learned from others and that, alongside formal education, those conversations continue to enrich her both personally and professionally.

Empowering Women to Lead Without Fear

Michelle believes women have a unique responsibility to care for and wisely manage the world's resources. In her view, it is something women are naturally gifted at, not only within their homes but also in their workplaces. Given greater opportunities, women should also seek leadership roles in the public sphere, where they have the ability to influence policies, improve communities, and change thousands of lives.

One thing Michelle has consistently observed among many women around her is the fear of failure, the fear of speaking up, of trying, and of taking risks. After experiencing one of the most difficult personal moments in her own life, she realized that she had lost that fear. Once fear no longer controlled her, she understood that the world was full of possibilities.

She encourages women not to pursue perfection but progress. Every day, they should strive to become better versions of themselves without comparing their journeys to anyone else's. She believes that mindset alone can take them remarkably far.

Michelle also believes that women remain underrepresented in the spaces where the most important decisions are made, whether in governments, legislatures, or global leadership positions. In her opinion, women need to be equally represented in those spaces. They need to reach executive offices, national assemblies, and decision-making institutions until representation truly reflects society.

She believes leadership is measured by the number of lives positively influenced. While it is possible to make a difference within a small office or even a multinational corporation, she believes women must also be willing to step outside their comfort zones and pursue opportunities where they can impact thousands of people at once.

Michelle believes women possess an extraordinary ability to lead with empathy, responsibility, and vision, yet they are still not represented at the level they should be. Although more remarkable women are beginning to have their voices heard, she believes many more are needed. Women must play a greater role in caring for the world's resources, protecting future generations, and shaping global leadership. That is why she encourages every woman to embrace public leadership, global leadership, and the courage to step forward, because, in her view, now is the time.

Conclusion

Michelle Arias Tapia's journey is a powerful reminder that authentic leadership is built on purpose, integrity, and the willingness to serve something greater than oneself. Whether leading transformative national initiatives, advising businesses on complex projects, or building her own firm, she has consistently demonstrated that meaningful success comes from creating opportunities that benefit both people and society. Her belief that leadership extends beyond professional achievement reflects a vision rooted in responsibility, lifelong learning, and lasting impact.

Equally inspiring is her unwavering commitment to family, which she considers her greatest achievement and the foundation of every professional success. By balancing ambition with compassion, resilience with humility, and expertise with service, Michelle continues to set an example of leadership that is both influential and deeply human. Her dedication to continuous learning, public service, and empowering the next generation further reinforces her desire to leave a legacy that reaches far beyond her own accomplishments.

As she looks toward the future, with aspirations to continue serving her country, educating future leaders, and expanding the legacy of Arias & Jované, Michelle remains driven by a clear purpose: to create meaningful change wherever she can. Her story serves as an inspiration to aspiring women leaders around the world, proving that when vision is guided by courage, values, and perseverance, it has the power to transform not only careers but entire communities and future generations.
