Behind every accurate diagnosis lies a story of dedication and expertise, and for Dr. Rawia Mubarak Mohamed, that story is one of purpose and perseverance. As a leading Consultant in Anatomical Pathology and Head of Department, she has turned personal tragedy into a lifelong mission of healing.
From advancing neuropathology research to pioneering digital pathology across the Middle East, her journey reflects a rare blend of scientific brilliance and visionary leadership. Along the way, she has inspired students, empowered colleagues, and strengthened cancer care practices with innovations that are shaping the future of medicine.
Her story is one of hope and determination, a reminder that women leaders in healthcare are transforming not only institutions but also the lives of countless patients worldwide.
My day is truly dynamic and diverse. As the Head of Anatomical Pathology and a Consultant Anatomical Pathology Physician, my role in the hospital is incredibly important. I manage the department and ensure that we provide accurate and timely diagnoses of diseases through the examination of tissue samples. I start my day by carefully reviewing and prioritizing pathology cases, meticulously examining tissue samples, and preparing detailed reports. Throughout the day, I engage with colleagues, supervise staff, and ensure the seamless functioning of the pathology department.
In addition to my hospital role, I am also one of the board members of the Emirates Pathology Society, where I contribute to strengthening collaboration, professional development, and excellence in pathology across the UAE.
I decided to pursue a career in medicine after the heartbreaking loss of my younger brother to cancer at the age of four. This personal experience deeply impacted me and inspired me to dedicate my life to advancing medical care. My journey as a physician has been both fulfilling and challenging. Along the way, I have gained extensive knowledge, valuable experience, and the resilience to continue striving for excellence in the field of pathology.
As the Head of Department, I find it deeply fulfilling to lead a team and shape the trajectory of the department. The most rewarding aspect of my role is contributing to accurate diagnoses and helping guide patient treatment to improve outcomes. Knowing that my work directly impacts lives brings me great satisfaction. At the same time, one of the most challenging aspects of being an Anatomical Pathology Physician is encountering complex and rare cases that require extensive research and collaboration. These cases push me to remain innovative and ensure precision in every diagnosis.
As Head of Department, I often face the challenge of implementing innovative practices, navigating organizational dynamics, and managing competing priorities. However, I view these challenges as opportunities for continuous growth. I overcome them by fostering a culture of open communication, encouraging collaboration across departments, and actively seeking input from my team members. By embracing collective expertise, I ensure that challenges become stepping stones for progress.
Throughout my career, I have had the honor of contributing to advancements in pathology both in the UAE and internationally. I earned my MBBS in Saudi Arabia in 2004 and later pursued a fellowship in Anatomical Pathology and Cytology from the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in 2011. Over the years, I have held leadership roles at several leading hospitals across Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, and the GCC, focusing on neuropathology, women’s health, gastrointestinal pathology, and oncology diagnostics.
In addition to my clinical role, I serve as an academic, holding positions as Associate Professor at Ras Al Khaimah Medical & Health Sciences University and previously at Khalifa University, RCSI Bahrain, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Teaching and mentoring medical students and pathology fellows remain some of the most meaningful aspects of my career.
I have been invited to speak at numerous international conferences, including health forums in Rome, where I discussed the latest ovarian cancer tests and biomarkers with experts and specialists from around the world. I also had the privilege to moderate and present sessions that highlight the role of pathology in advancing cancer care.
A recent milestone in my journey was being appointed as the Regional Ambassador of the Asian Society of Digital Pathology (ASDP), where I actively promote the integration of digital platforms, AI validation, and quality assurance in pathology practices across Asia. Another significant contribution was leading Burjeel Holdings’ Anatomical Pathology Laboratory in pioneering Claudin 18.2 immunohistochemistry testing in the UAE and the Middle East, marking a groundbreaking advancement for gastric and gastroesophageal cancer diagnostics.
Another significant contribution under my leadership was introducing Claudin 18.2 immunohistochemistry testing at Burjeel Holdings’ Anatomical Pathology Laboratory. With my leadership and the support of oncologists at Burjeel Hospital, namely Prof. Humaid Al Shamsi, and with the backing of the laboratory’s leadership, my team successfully became the first in the region to provide this advanced test. This initiative marked a groundbreaking advancement for gastric and gastroesophageal cancer diagnostics in the UAE and the wider Middle East.
Looking ahead, I aspire to continue advancing precision medicine and digital pathology in the region. My goal is to bridge science and society by combining clinical excellence with public education, empowering patients with accurate information, and fostering innovation in diagnostics. I am committed to strengthening collaborative research, mentoring the next generation of physicians, and driving healthcare practices that improve outcomes for patients across the world.
