Following the loss of her second husband, a respected Swedish heart doctor, Carina was left to raise their three sons alone. As an SQA Engineer, she worked on software designed to protect users and enterprises from digital threats. Gunjan earned her Bachelor of Technology degree in Electrical Engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, one of the most respected engineering institutions in the world. She later pursued a Master of Science degree in Computer Science from California State University, Long Beach, further strengthening her expertise in software and computing technologies.

Gunjan was recognized as an honoree with Marquis Who’s Who for her contributions to software engineering and technology. In 2025, she was named Top Senior Software Engineer of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals. The organization later selected her for The Empowered Woman Award for 2025, recognizing both her professional accomplishments and her role as a leader for women in technology.

Beyond her technical achievements, Gunjan has also remained deeply involved in community and cultural engagement. During her time at IIT Kanpur, she served as secretary and coordinator of the Western Music Club, encouraging cultural participation and student involvement on campus. Born and raised in Kubha, a remote village in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province, Dr. Mkuzo’s early life was shaped by resilience, community values, and the philosophy of Ubuntu. Growing up in an environment with limited educational resources and minimal technological infrastructure, she witnessed firsthand how rural communities were often excluded from global opportunities and modern innovation. Despite financial hardships and the challenges of living far from major educational institutions, she remained determined to create a different future for herself and for others who shared similar realities.

The democratic transition of South Africa following the release of Nelson Mandela became a turning point in her journey. It opened doors that enabled her to relocate to Durban for secondary and tertiary education, marking the beginning of a path that would eventually position her as an internationally recognized social entrepreneur and advocate for rural inclusion. During her time at Kingsway High School, she demonstrated early leadership qualities by serving as a Grade 8 High School Mentor. Her commitment to academic excellence later earned her bursaries that supported her continued studies despite her family’s financial limitations.

Dr. Mkuzo pursued an extensive academic journey that reflects both determination and intellectual excellence. She earned a PhD in Management Sciences, specializing in Public Administration and Public Management, from the Durban University of Technology (DUT). Her academic background also includes a Master’s in Commerce from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), a B-Tech in Management, and a National Diploma in Management from DUT. In addition, she completed studies in Social Entrepreneurship at the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS), an experience that would significantly shape her future vision and entrepreneurial direction.

Following her academic achievements, Dr. Mkuzo entered the corporate sector, spending more than a decade in various roles within a major mining company in Gauteng. While her corporate career offered professional growth and financial stability, her visits back home to Kubha remained emotionally significant. The contrast between urban advancement and the ongoing struggles within rural communities reinforced her awareness of the deep inequalities and digital divide affecting millions of people across underserved regions.

Determined to become part of the solution, Dr. Mkuzo made a life-changing decision after completing her social entrepreneurship studies at GIBS in 2016. Inspired by the possibilities of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and motivated by the desire to create meaningful access for rural communities, she resigned from her corporate role and invested her own company shares as seed capital to establish Urglobal, also known as Ubuntu Renaissance Global.

Through Urglobal, Dr. Mkuzo introduced the groundbreaking Mobile Rural Technology Park (MRTP) initiative, a first-of-its-kind innovation in South Africa and across Africa. The revolving mobile technology park model was designed specifically to bring digital learning opportunities directly into rural schools and underserved communities regardless of infrastructure limitations. The initiative provides access to laptops, coding kits, drone technology, and virtual reality experiences for learners, particularly students in Grades 6 to 9. Guided by the principles of Ubuntu, she continues to advocate for access, collaboration, and empowerment through both local and international partnerships.

Her impact and leadership have earned widespread recognition on both national and global platforms. Internationally, she was selected as a 2022 TechWomen Fellow, a prestigious initiative of the U.S. Department of State that empowers women in STEM fields. As part of the fellowship, she traveled to Silicon Valley and completed professional mentorship placement at Apple Headquarters in San Francisco. In 2018, she became a Mandela Washington Fellow and attended the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota.
